Review of Avengers' 'GATEWAY TO HEXENLAND'-demo
Reviewed by Flossy of the Reanimators/Syndicate
The demo was made by some french guys who were members of ULM. And
if you want to see some of their previous productions then have a
look at the ULM new year demo.
The first thing that appears are an 'Please-Wait'-logo and several
tracks later the --- INTRO --- appears on the screen.. It contains
a teradisting 'Avengers'-logo which is precalculated (otherwise it
should have had some more sinewaves), and an ugly tracker module
is being played at a quite high frequency.
Off we go and press space and a nice loader, with three quite nice
48x48 'AVG' sprites with some text in the background, describing
the coming screens.
Mainmenu loaded and wooooooooow... geez... this one's very similar
to the one in the 'darksideofthespoon'-demo... but there is a bit
of difference anyway.... there is a 16 colors scroller (which is
scrolling in 8 pixels/frame and it sure is hard to read...)
The first screen I enter is the 'Ying Yang Demo', it has 2 full
screen parallax layers, 3 'AVG' sprites in 3 colors, and some
'DE JANEIRO' sprites (some kind of egotrip, eh?).. and a quite
big distscroller with some ugly rasters on it... This screen is
totally messed up and I wouldn't have mentioned it, it duzn't
deserve it.
Hopefully ze next screen will be better..............
It is the 'Clone' screen, and if it is coded on a PC clone or
what I dunno. Anystreet there is a big scroller with the font
from the 'Delirious Demo II' mainmenu. And there is a shadow of
the scroller too, which is wobbling smoothly. A nice starfield
with growing stars, and a disting 'AVG' logo in 3 colors, and
finally some nice ballsprites... Puh... dis screen was better than
the previous... Not too messed up etc.
When the SF314 is loading the next screen I am informed by the
loader that the coming screen is the oldest one in the whole demo
and logically it is called 'Prehistoric'. It has a load of small
scrollers, similar to the ones in the TCB 'Spreadpoint'-demo, and
there is a big 'AVG' logo disting around the place and an ugly
writer, which uses the wellknown 'Knighthawks'-font... Well it is
sure not very clever to use a 32 width font with a writer, 'coz
how nice duz it look when you want to write a word longer than
10 chars? Fyfan.... I DO NOT like this screen
Another new and never seen before idea is 'Vectorballs', and that
is the name on the screen coming up now.. some sure nice balls
which doesn't run at full frame rate, and some objects doesn't
even run at half frame rate.... Yuk... Even though the odd object
is very nice. Even though the best vectorball screen in my opinion
for the moment is the one by 'THE FINAL SPACECODERS' which is an
quite unknown swedish crew, and I'll send the screen to this mag,
and hopefully they'll put it somewhere on the disk so you can have
a look at it. Oh... onto the subject again: There is also a eight
color xdisting scroller which contains a font by Speedlight/OVR.
The next screen.... bah!! I don't wanto write a shit 'bout it coz
it is too messy like the 'Ying-Yang demo'. Its name is not Bob Hay
but 'Multitext' and it means loads of scrollers.... So boring.....
And now... Something completely different..... A GAME! Yes Yes Yes
No..... It is 'Othello' and it looks like the PD games you find on
Automation menus, so I decide to quit.
The next screen have some quite nice sprites i 8 colors, running
around the place like they've drinking loads of vodka. And there
is a big scroller which have a font by a coder (I won't say nuttin
more).... Somehow this screen is quite nice (beaver)..
The next screen is a 3D demo, with quite nice and big, filled
vectors. Some of the objects are very nice. And in the back there
is a 16 colors piccy of some planets and in the bottom there is a
342x32, 3 colors scrolline.
Then to my favourite screen in dis demo: 'The Pergadem'.... There
is full overscan, and the whole screen in 3 colors are scrolling
past, and over it there is a big one plane scroller, and finally
over all before mentioned stuff there is a 'TV'-scroller using a
3 color version of the 'megadeth'-font by Spazoftlb. Really NICE!
And ofcourse there is 3 small 'AVG' sprites which seems to have a
bad habit of drinking too much booze.... In other words there are
drunk sprites. Nah... I am just stupid...
Madballs does it alone... .nah... Quite a funny idea all this, but
once again all is a bit messed up. However there is a big 1 color
scroller, loads of ugly rasters, some cool vu-meters in the bottom
border, loads of onecolored sprites and a strange kind of writer
which is made up by 16x16 balls (cool idea..)
Schwingalokate.... 'Fullswing' is the name of the next screen, and
the swedish word 'Fullswing' is the same as the english word
'Drunkdance'... Hehehe... However this screen contains a disting
big 'AVG' logo, full overscan filled with some small blocks, and
disting the whole screen, and finally a quite big scroller in tri
colors.... VERY nice ONe Dis Is YEs , VErrY gooD...
And no screens left... or well after 10 min. of searching for the
reset button on this god damned 520STM, there appears a totally
messed up reset demo... yuk..... Nuttin' 2 say 'bout it....
In total this demo is very well worth its diskspace, and I really
look forward to see the next demo from these guys. There is some
highlights in the demo, and I suppose the screens I've been
complaining over are the older ones.... Quite good grafficks even
though there could have been more own stuff. The music is made by
Count Zero, Jochen and ENS.......
